Midwifes/Parteras and with many other names, have traditionally taken care of ALL of the pregnant/birthing women in this world of ours until just a few hundred years ago. In some parts of the world, we still take care of the majority of pregnant/birthing women. We hope to change the availability and acceptance of Midwifery care here in the US, so that it will once again be the STANDARD care for pregnant women in the US. If you are pregnant, and thinking about a home birth, please look at my website. I only attend home births.
To my Southern California patients, here is some news. In 2006, the Mexican government in Baja California began blocking the ability of home birth patients to get birth certificates for any child born outside of a hospital. They also warned Midwifes that if they continued to practice they could do a year in jail. This has killed Midwifery care and the ability for Mexican women to have the option of a home birth. So, in April of 2006 I quit doing prenatal care and home births in Tijuana. I had done almost 500 home births by then, but being that the government there made it illegal for anyone to attend a home birth, to continue helping the poor women there would mean risking the chance that I would wind up in a Tijuana Jail! Everyone there knew that the Baja California lawmakers caved in to pressure from private practice doctors who didn't like the competition from the many practicing Tijuana Midwifes, but the real result of this change is that all of Baja California's women lost this precious right, and poor women in Mexico in reality, had very few before. At that time, I removed my Apprentice page, the Latest 5 births page and Coming Events page. So now, instead of attending about 100 home births a year in Tijuana, I now do just a few here in Southern California. So, that does leave me with more time to care for the patients that I have here. Contact me if you are pregnant and thinking about a home birth. Jerry
